About
From September 1 to 3 every year, Yatsuo in Toyama City holds a tradition that draws around 200,000 people over three days. Thousands of softly lit paper lanterns line streets of latticed houses and storehouses, and dancers in matching happi coats or yukata and woven straw hats move slowly along them to the jikata music of shamisen, kokyu fiddle and drums. Passed down for more than 300 years, the songs and dances carry a sense of sorrow along with quiet dignity. September 1 is the two hundred and tenth day after the traditional start of spring and overlaps with typhoon season, so it was long seen as an unlucky day for wind; the name "Kaze no Bon" (Bon of the Wind) is said to come from the festival's prayers for a good harvest and protection from wind damage.
