About

Hakusangu Shrine in Kaminashi, part of the World Heritage area of Gokayama, holds this festival every September 25 and 26; together with the Mugiya Matsuri, it ranks as one of Gokayama's two great festivals. In the shrine grounds, to the sound of flute and drum, dancers present an elegant dance set to a melancholy tune. A special stage in front of the Kokiriko-kan hall hosts folk songs and lion dances, with all of Kaminashi pitching in. In the Kokiriko So-odori, residents dance together in a large ring, and spectators can join in while rattling a sasara, the traditional wooden clapper. The program runs from offertory kokiriko dances at the shrine during the day to a stage competition at night.
