About

Every May 1 to 3, Fukuno in Nanto holds a festival recognized as "Future Heritage" by the National Federation of UNESCO Associations in Japan. The story goes that in 1652, as the town recovered from a great fire and built Fukuno Shinmei Shrine, townspeople set out to receive a spirit from the Ise Grand Shrine and lit the evening road with hand lanterns. On the eve nights of May 1 and 2, enormous lanterns taller than six meters are hauled around the streets to shouts of "Yoiyasa!" The climax is the hikiai at around 23:00 on May 2, a rough clash in which young men riding on the lanterns smash at rival lanterns as they pass. On May 3, the main festival day, carved and decorated floats travel through town.
