About

Yatsuo, a hillside town within Toyama City, holds its spring festival every May 3. The float ritual carries on the townspeople's culture of the Edo period, when Yatsuo prospered in service to the Toyama domain. A lion dance goes first, clearing and purifying the path for the portable shrine and the floats. Behind it, young people in matching happi coats haul six floats through narrow, steep lanes to float music of shamisen, flute and drums. Once the daytime procession is over, the carvings and decorations are taken off and the floats return covered in lanterns, glowing over the sloping town at night like a castle that never sleeps.
