About
Fushiki, a port in Takaoka that thrived as a stop for the Kitamaebune trading ships, holds the spring grand festival of Fushiki Shrine, famous as Kenka-yama, the "fighting floats." The festival gives thanks for the sea's gifts and asks for safe voyages, and it is said to have begun in 1820 when the Nakamachi district built the first float. Seven floats tour the town by day under spreading flower parasols, then reappear at night as lantern floats hung with some 360 lanterns each. Everyone waits for the kaccha, when floats slam into each other head-on amid pounding drums and cries of "Iyasa!", again and again until late at night. Damage from the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake means there is no parking near the venue, so please come by public transport; Fushiki Station on the JR Himi Line is five minutes' walk away.
