About

On April 29 each year, Isurugi in Oyabe, once a key stop on the old Hokuriku Highway, holds the spring festival of Isurugi Atago Shrine, said to have continued since the middle of the Edo period. Eleven flower floats, each a showcase of fine craft work, are drawn through the streets to festival music. An impressive sight comes in the early afternoon, when all eleven line up at the festival plaza in front of Oyabe Civic Exchange Plaza for a send-off ceremony. Then they split up to follow their own neighborhood routes, filling the town with chants, music and the creak of wooden wheels. As evening comes the lanterns are lit, and the floats take on an entirely different look. Children can sign up to ride on a lantern float.
