About
On August 1 every year, fireworks rise above the Jinzu River downstream of Arisawa Bridge, close to downtown Toyama. The display started in 1947, two years after the air raid that struck Toyama on the night of August 1–2, 1945, as a way to mourn the victims and wish for recovery and peace. Today it is a summer fixture that people across Toyama love, and families and other spectators gather in large numbers along the river. Vivid starmine barrages, rapid-fire large shakudama shells and fireworks synchronized with music fill both the sky and the river's surface. Admission is free; with no parking near the venue, organizers recommend public transport. The show is cancelled in stormy weather.
