About
With a history of more than 300 years, the Tatemon Festival is Uozu's pride and is inscribed as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. The star is the tatemon, a pillar about 16 meters tall hung with more than 90 lanterns in a triangle, weighing roughly 5 tons altogether. Crews in happi coats pull together in time with drums and flutes, hauling the floats from the Uozu seashore to the grounds of Suwa Shrine. The moment to watch is the spinning offering, when a tatemon is whirled around with real force for the gods. It is a prayer for good fishing and safe voyages, and the light of hundreds of lanterns hangs in the night sky. Combined with the fireworks over the sea held on the same day, it makes one of the defining scenes of an Uozu summer.
