About
On the day of Kanaya Shrine's grand festival in Hagi's Tsubaki district, the old castle town and the streets around it fill with people dressed as if from the Edo period. The centerpiece is the Hagi Daimyo Procession, offered to the shrine since Edo times: footmen and retainers in hakama and kamishimo surround a lord's palanquin as it makes its way through the city. Each time a shout of "Isa-yoshi!" rings out, the feathered spears fly through the air to new bearers. Where the palanquin is set down, look for the zori-mai, a dance performed with straw sandals in hand. In the afternoon the Hagi Period Parade leaves Central Park for Kanaya Shrine, with the Mori lords and Takasugi Shinsaku's Kiheitai militia among its ranks. At the shrine, the Choshu Ipponyari shows off a spear about 5.5 meters long, swung with real flair.
