About

Ube Matsuri is the largest festival in Ube, a city built on coal. It began in 1934 as the Tanto-sai, or Coal City Festival, to celebrate the city's founding. Its emblem is the Nanban Ondo parade, where teams dance through the streets to an old coal miners' work song that carries the city's pride. Tokiwa-dori avenue also sees citizens' parades, hikiyama floats and yosakoi dancers, and "coal mochi" rice cakes are handed out. The main stage, set up in the open-air car park at City Hall, features the Nanban Ondo preservation society, Ube taiko, yosakoi and local groups, and around the streets you'll find a festival square of stalls, the Ube Marche for food and shopping, and street performances of music and busking acts. The 2026 festival, the seventy-fifth, marks 105 years since Ube became a city.
