About
Yanai Matsuri, one of the city's three major festivals, gives thanks for the autumn harvest. It takes place every year on November 23, a public holiday, mainly between JR Yanai Station and the white-walled old streets. The main event is the Hanagasa Odori on Reitoro-dori, where groups dance with colorful flower umbrellas one after another, bells ringing, as if in friendly competition. Near the Butterfly Arena, a farm, forestry and fisheries fair and a welfare market are held, with dishes made from local produce to try. In the white-walled streets, the Shirakabe Edo Festival offers old-time games like archery booths and shooting galleries, and the whole town stays in festival mood all day.
