About
Each year, when the wild camellias flower, a festival is held in the camellia forest at Toragasaki on Mt. Kasayama in Hagi. About 25,000 trees cover roughly 10 hectares, and the best viewing usually runs from mid-February to late March. Look up for bright blooms on the high branches, then look down at the fallen flowers, known as ochi-tsubaki, lying in red drifts on the ground. On weekends and holidays, camellia guides lead free walks, Hagi Tsubaki Komachi hostesses welcome visitors, and there are seedling sales, stage events and a quiz rally. A free shuttle bus also runs on those days between the Koshigahama municipal parking lot and the forest.
