About

In early spring, fire is set to the grasslands of Akiyoshidai, one of Japan's largest karst plateaus. The burn has long been carried out to keep the landscape of green grass and white limestone, and it took on its current form about 100 years ago. Once lit, the flames crackle and race outward until some 1,138 hectares of grassland disappear under fire and smoke, a sight described as Japan's largest field burning. By May the scorched black plateau is covered again in fresh green. In 2026 it went ahead later than first planned. The date can shift with the weather, traffic is restricted on the day, and the Mine City Tourism Association streams the burn live on YouTube.
