About
Designated a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property, this fire festival in Atsuki, Yanai, began in the first year of the Shoho era and has continued for over 370 years. Two sacred structures called shinmei are set up, one to the east and one to the west, and shinmei dances and other offerings are performed. Watch for the okoshidate, when the shinmei are hoisted upright early in the morning, and the hayashikata at night, when they are set on fire. The festival fills an entire day, from morning to night. It is held in front of the East and West Shinmei shrines in Atsuki, about 20 minutes by car from JR Yanai Station.
