About
Before Hofu Tenmangu Shrine's great autumn festival, the Goshinkosai, the Daigyoji and Shogyoji officiants who serve in it visit the shrine with the hanamiko flower maidens and offer sacred sake called ichiya-yuzuri, praying that the festival will go smoothly. These roles are filled by the Fujii and Shimizu families, whose ancestors were local officials when Sugawara no Michizane came ashore here. Around 500 people in period dress, with flower baskets and yakko footmen, walk slowly from Aspirato in front of Hofu Station to the shrine, a procession both solemn and graceful. There is no charge to watch, but traffic restrictions apply on the day. The shrine is about 20 minutes' walk from JR Hofu Station on the Sanyo Line.
