About
Hanaoka Hachimangu Shrine in Kudamatsu holds this autumn grand festival to give thanks for the harvest. The eve festival starts at 18:30 on the first day; on the last day the main rite begins at 13:00 and the divine procession at 16:00. The shrine is said to have welcomed a share of the spirit of the Hachiman shrine at Usa in Buzen Province in 709, and when the deity was installed, the hill reportedly burst into flower overnight by divine will, which is where the name Hanaoka (flower hill) comes from. The main buildings, rebuilt in the Bunka-Bunsei era, carry carvings by Iwase Chogoro, and a multi-storied pagoda in the grounds recalls the days when kami and Buddhas were worshipped together. The wooded precinct looks out over the Suetake Plain and the Seto Inland Sea. Suo-Hanaoka Station on the JR Gantoku Line is about a 10-minute walk away.
