About
From July 1 to 7 each year, Hofu Tenmangu Shrine holds its Tanabata star festival. It started in 2013, inspired by the story that the enshrined scholar Sugawara no Michizane once made a Tanabata wish, and it is a time to pray for happiness, love, a happy marriage and the safety of one's household. You can write a wish on a paper strip in the grounds and tie it to the bamboo. Once night falls, art made of umbrellas linked into balls lights up, and the hall of worship, corridors and gate area become the "Yuniwa of Light." Shrine maiden dances, a tea gathering, concerts and a Tanabata prayer service are held during the period, and a goshuin seal offered only at this time is available.
