About
In the Kayoi district on Omijima Island in Nagato, this unusual festival brings traditional whaling back to life. Kayoi's bay-shaped shoreline tended to draw in stray whales, and in the Edo period the village thrived as a base for whaling with harpoons and nets. At the festival, local men in red loincloths act out the old-style hunt with plenty of gusto. It is held on the reclaimed land at Koura in Kayoi, which you can reach by bus from JR Nagatoshi Station.
