About

Kintaikyo Matsuri is a historical festival held around Iwakuni's Kintaikyo Bridge every year on April 29, a national holiday. Its main attraction is a daimyo procession and yakko footmen's parade recreating the sankin-kotai journeys of the Edo period, and watching the costumed marchers cross the bridge is like stepping into a picture scroll. Nearby, the Iwakuni Domain Matchlock Gun Corps gives demonstrations and Iwakuni taiko drummers perform, along with other events. It is organized by an executive committee whose office is at the Iwakuni City Tourism Association. Extensive traffic restrictions apply around the area that day, so public transportation is the easier choice.
