About
Ichinomiya, a city known for its wool textiles, celebrates for four days, from Thursday to the last Sunday of July. The festival thanks the weaving deity of Hatori Shrine, which stands within Masumida Shrine, and asks for a thriving textile trade, a natural fit with the Tanabata tale of the weaver and the cowherd. Started in 1956, it is now the summer event locals look forward to most. Streamers and big arched decorations hang over the shopping arcades, and night stalls run from the shrine grounds into town. Look out for the grand procession that delivers locally made wool cloth to the shrine in period costume, the Wassho Ichinomiya dance parade, where each team picks its own costumes and moves, plus a cosplay parade and a bon dance.
