About
Yoshida Shrine's annual festival fills summer in Toyohashi with fireworks. Mikawa developed a knack for pyrotechnics because it once handled gunpowder for the Tokugawa shogunate, and Toyohashi is considered the home of the region's tezutsu, fireworks held in the hands. On Friday evening, giant tubes, scattering fireballs and tezutsu are set off as offerings inside the shrine grounds. On Saturday a big fireworks display lights up the sky over the Toyogawa River, a show known since the Edo period as the fireworks festival of Mikawa Yoshida. On Sunday a portable shrine is paraded through the city. The shrine honors Susanoo, the festival is said to have begun in 1124, and a supporters' group of volunteers from eight parish neighborhoods runs it.
