About
Summer in Toyohama, a fishing town in Minamichita, means giant sea bream: model fish over 10 meters long, framed in bamboo and wood and wrapped in white cotton. Young men carry them on their shoulders through the streets, swinging the tails and spreading the fins so the fish seem to be swimming, while onlookers cheer them on. The festival prays for the town and for safety at sea, and is sometimes called one of Japan's strangest festivals. It is held over two days, one in the Nakasu district and one in Susa, and the Toyohama fireworks take place around the same time. Get there by Meitetsu to Utsumi or Kowa Station, then the Umikko bus.
