Chiba Oyako Sandai Summer Festival (Three Generations Festival)

About

For half a century, this festival centered on Chiba Central Park has been a fixture of high summer in Chiba City. The program rolls through mikoshi portable shrines, festival floats, parades, yosakoi naruko dancing and a procession of children dressed as samurai. The finale is the Oyako Sandai Chiba Odori, when around 2,000 dancers move through the streets to the beat of taiko drums. Drop-in dancers are welcome, so grandparents, parents and children can all join the same procession. The festival's 51st edition in 2026, which fell in the 900th anniversary year of Chiba's founding, was cancelled after heavy rain caused damage, so that disaster response and public safety could come first. The park is about a 7-minute walk from JR Chiba Station.
