About

At Nakayama Hokekyoji in Ichikawa, Nichiren Buddhist priests from all over Japan undertake a 100-day period of austerities every year from November 1 to February 10, and this ceremony marks its end. Secluded in the training hall, they rise at 2:00 a.m., purify themselves by dousing their bodies in cold water seven times a day, and devote themselves to chanting and copying sutras. They go barefoot in plain hemp robes, eat only white rice porridge morning and evening, and have no contact even with their families. At 6:00 a.m. on the final day, the temple gate opens and the priests who have completed the ordeal step out to be greeted by parishioners, supporters and townspeople, after which the completion ceremony is held in the Founder's Hall. Watching is free.
