About

On Setsubun, Naritasan Shinshoji Temple holds a traditional ceremony praying for peace in the land, happiness for all, good harvests and the turning of misfortune into fortune. At the Special Tsuina bean-throwing in front of the Great Main Hall, sumo wrestlers and many famous faces line up as toshiotoko, people born in that year's zodiac sign, and throw beans with gusto. The other ceremony, Kaiun Mamemaki, is open to anyone who pays a participation fee: after receiving a goma fire prayer, participants throw beans before the principal image, Fudo Myoo. Each is held three times a day at separate times. What makes Narita different is the chant: no one calls "demons out," only "fortune in," because it is said that in the face of Fudo Myoo's deep compassion even demons reform. The temple is about 10 minutes on foot from Keisei Narita and JR Narita stations.
