About
Katsuura greets spring by covering the town in hina dolls sent from all over Japan; about 25,000 were on display across the city in 2026. The sight not to miss is the 60 stone steps of Tomisaki Shrine, set out every morning with about 1,800 dolls and illuminated from dusk. In the main hall of the Katsuura Arts and Culture Center (Küste), around 7,000 more include one of Japan's largest Kyoho-style doll sets, traditional dolls from the Edo period to the Showa era, and a display explaining how dolls in eastern and western Japan differ. In the Katsuura central shopping street next to the shrine, each shop arranges its dolls in its own creative way, and large special doll tiers stand in front of the gate of Kakuoji Temple and at a nearby intersection. JR Katsuura Station on the Sotobo Line is about 10 minutes away on foot.
