About
At the annual festival of Junisho Shrine, guardian of the Mona district of Tateyama, taro is offered to the gods in early spring to pray for a good harvest and good health through the year. The custom was designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan in 2005. On the day before, parishioners bring a taro called akame to the house whose turn it is to host, peel it, spear it on bush-clover twigs and pile it up into a pair of large, decorated, mountain-shaped offerings. These are carried into the shrine for the ceremony on the festival day. Afterward the taro is divided among the parish households and eaten as a charm against illness, since people here say that eating taro keeps sickness away.
