About

Every September, Tamasaki Shrine, the foremost shrine of old Kazusa Province, in Ichinomiya Town, holds its grand festival. Said to have begun in 807, it is a designated Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Chiba Prefecture. The rite tells of the goddess Tamayorihime reuniting once a year with her family of deities at Tsurigasaki Beach, a place linked to her, and it is considered the oldest of the many beach-procession rituals on the Boso Peninsula. Nine mikoshi from 5 shrines, including Nangu Shrine, gather at the Tsurigasaki ritual ground, and the shiofumi, when nearly naked men run along the water's edge carrying them, is the most thrilling moment of the day. Kazusa kagura is also offered, and children walk in a costumed procession.
