About
For 4 days in autumn, Katsuura is swept up in its festival. Around the fishing port, Tomisaki and Kawazu shrines and the central shopping street, mikoshi are shouldered all at once, festival wagons and floats from the late Edo period are pulled through the streets, and musicians try to outplay one another. The bold shouts and sheer strength of the bearers, so typical of a fishing town, draw spectators right in. On the last day the mikoshi are handed from boat to boat in Katsuura Fishing Port, depending on weather and sea conditions. Each district makes its neighborhood rounds on its own timetable. The festival area is about a 5-minute walk from Katsuura Station on the JR Sotobo Line, and visitors are encouraged to use public transport.
