About
In late September, Ohara in Isumi City stages a two-day autumn festival often described as the most spirited in the Kanto region. It is thought to have continued since the Edo period, and votive plaques show that its customs and organization were already established in the Tenpo era. The first day's highlight is the shiofumi at Ohara Beach: more than ten mikoshi charge into the sea together to pray for good harvests and catches, clashing as the waves toss them and being flung high into the air. At dusk on both days comes the farewell ceremony, when the mikoshi parade along the shopping street to the grounds of Ohara Elementary School and, as fireworks fill the sky, the bearers sing festival songs of parting.
