About
This lion dance has been passed down at Komagata Shrine in the Kuno district of Tomisato since the mid-Edo period, and it is performed in front of the shrine hall twice a year, in spring and autumn, to pray for good harvests and road safety. It begins with Sangiri Daiko, a drum piece, then moves to the dances of the female lion, the middle lion and the male lion. The story unfolds in the second half: in the quarrel dance, two male lions fight over one female, and in the reconciliation dance they realize the futility of fighting and make up. The humorous movements and clear plot make it easy to follow. In 2026 an extra performance at the end of summer was planned in addition to the spring one. From Keisei Narita Station, take the Chiba Kotsu bus for Kuno Ryogoku and get off at Kuno Jinja-mae, right by the shrine. Times may change depending on the weather.
