About
Suwa Shrine in Sasagawa, Tonosho, keeps a kagura tradition associated with the Genji clan that is said to be more than 800 years old; it is an intangible folk cultural property of Chiba Prefecture. According to tradition, To no Tsuneyori, a descendant of the Chiba clan renowned for passing on the Kokin Denju, the secret interpretations of the Kokinshu poetry anthology, shaped it into its present form of 16 dances in 1475. Hosting rotates among 7 districts, and the main kagura is performed on the first Saturday of April. In 2026 the Kanodo district hosted, and dancing went on from 12:00 to 22:00 on both the main day and the eve performance the day before. The shrine is about a 5-minute walk from Sasagawa Station on the JR Narita Line.
