About
For three days each July, the town of Kanazu in Awara celebrates a festival that the city lists as an intangible folk cultural property, and it all happens just steps from Awaraonsen Station on the Hokuriku Shinkansen. Floats crowned with figures roll through the streets alongside children's dance groups, and the signature moment comes on the main day, when the floats line up before the torii of Kanazu Shrine. The shrine's mikoshi also makes its rounds, its bearers full of energy. Don't miss the honjin kazarimono: displays assembled from ordinary household items, a roughly 400-year-old custom said to have started as a welcome for feudal lords travelling to and from Edo. Each district builds its own, so wandering the town to find them is half the fun. A taiko stage on the eve makes a good start.
