About
Each October, Wakasa Obama hosts a food festival that gathers local flavors and regional favorites from across Japan in one spot. A fixture for about two decades, it is held on a special site in the Kawasaki waterfront district beside the Miketsukuni Wakasa Obama Food Culture Museum. The local dish to try first is Obama ramen, available only here, in a mackerel-based broth that is clean-tasting yet full of flavor. You can grill fresh seafood and overnight-dried fish on charcoal braziers, compare mackerel sushi from Obama, where the old Mackerel Road (Saba Kaido) began, and pick up canned mackerel and Fukui sake. Visiting stalls include Marugame bone-in chicken from Kagawa, which always draws a queue, Fujinomiya yakisoba from Shizuoka, Nakatsu fried chicken from Oita and Tsuyama offal udon from Okayama, plus products from sister city Nara.
