About
During the early-May holidays, Nishiyama Park in Sabae is ablaze with about 50,000 azalea shrubs, and the festival draws around 200,000 visitors in a typical year to its rows of food stalls. Expect stage events, a kids' corner, a food area devoted to Sabae produce and a free eyeglass-cleaning booth. In 2026 a first-ever evening program, the adults' azalea festival, was added. The park also has a zoo, an adventure playground, a Japanese garden and a roadside station, so families can easily spend the day. The festival dates back to 1960. Nearby roads get very busy, so drivers are asked to park at Sun Dome Fukui's temporary lot and take the shuttle bus; Nishiyama Koen Station on the Fukui Railway is right at the park.
