About
From May 19 to 21, Mikuni Shrine in Mikuni, Sakai, holds its grand festival, one of the three great festivals of Hokuriku and an intangible folk cultural property of Fukui Prefecture. The main event is the float procession on May 20, the middle day: to shamisen, flutes and drums played by children, 6 floats line up before the shrine and then roll through town. Toward evening, as they reach the station street, young men from each district gather with tall lanterns and the festival hits its peak; then the floats push back through crowds and food stalls to their home districts, pullers and onlookers moving together. Floats bearing huge figures are said to go back about 300 years; in the mid-Meiji era they topped 10 meters, their warrior heads visible from nearby villages. Today they stand about 6.5 meters, and the figures are made fresh every year.
