About
Each spring the old castle town of Akizuki in Asakura fills with hina dolls for the Doll Festival. The star attraction is the stone stairway in front of the Nagayamon Gate at the Akizuki Castle ruins, where about 600 dolls cover 21 steps. That stairway display appears only on weekends, holidays and March 3, and is called off in rain; come in the morning and you can help put the dolls in place. Elsewhere, shops showing dolls form a quiz rally route, and there are Doll Festival craft workshops. Sometimes called the Little Kyoto of Chikuzen, Akizuki keeps its Edo-era streetscape, and everything lies within about 1 km, so it is easy to explore on foot.
