About

For about a month, from mid-February to mid-March, the streets of Yame are dotted with Doll Festival dolls. Walk through the white-walled old quarter of Yame-Fukushima and the central shopping streets and you can compare dolls at around 100 homes and shops, from Edo- and Meiji-era box dolls to modern sets. Yame is said to be where box-style hina dolls began, and dolls have long been made here. Kyushu celebrates the Doll Festival so keenly that it is sometimes called the land of hina, and this is a fine place to feel that spirit. Markets and other events are held on weekends during the festival.
