About

On festival day, Akama in Munakata, an Edo-period post town on the Karatsu Kaido highway, brings its old street back to life. Akama-juku Street, still lined with sake breweries and old merchant houses, is closed to traffic, and historic homes and breweries that are normally shut open their doors. At the brewery open house you can taste sake and buy limited bottlings found only here. The main event is the bridal procession: a bride and groom recruited from the public walk the highway in traditional dress, trailed by people dressed as magistrates and town girls, as spectators call out congratulations. Local stalls fill the street, and Akama taiko drummers open the stage program. Simply strolling past the white walls and latticed windows gives you a feel for the old post town.
