About
Kushida Shrine, Hakata's guardian shrine, holds this autumn grand festival to give thanks for the harvest, a tradition that goes back 1,200 years. It is sometimes counted among Japan's three great kunchi festivals, along with those in Karatsu and Nagasaki. The main draw is the Gojinko, or Okunchi Parade, on the last day: a mikoshi pulled by an ox cart leads children in costume, brass bands and others through Hakata's autumn streets. As evening falls, countless little lamps glow across the grounds in the Sentomyo. During the day a harvest market offers fresh fish and vegetables, and on the day of the main rite worshippers are served okunchi amazake.
