About
Pottery lovers head to the Koishiwara area of Toho Village for this fair, held in spring and autumn and the largest market of its kind in the district. Around 40 kilns producing Koishiwara and Takatori ware open up together, and during the fair pieces sell for about 20 percent below their usual price. Koishiwara ware has some 350 years of history and is known for patterns such as tobikanna chatter marks and the warmth of its clay; the British potter Bernard Leach admired its beauty in everyday use. At the Koishiwara Pottery Traditional Industry Hall you can paint a plate or try tobikanna carving. Traffic tends to build toward midday, so set out early. Free shuttle buses run from Hikosan Station on the BRT Hikoboshi Line during the fair.
