About
On the morning of October 1, a great fleet of fishing boats flying bright big-catch flags crosses the Genkai Sea for Munakata Taisha's autumn festival. Miare opens the shrine's autumn grand festival, which runs from October 1 to 3, praying for safe sailing, plentiful fish and a thriving community as the three Munakata goddesses are welcomed to Hetsugu. After a send-off ceremony at Nakatsugu on Oshima Island, more than 100 boats surround the sacred vessel and leave Oshima Port for Konominato Port; in 2026 they departed at 9:35 am. From Konominato the procession goes on by land, arriving at Hetsugu around noon. The 2nd brings horseback archery and the annual rite, and the 3rd the Takamiya Kannabi rite. Munakata Taisha is a World Cultural Heritage site.
