About
Koriyama's biggest summer festival is built around the legend of the uneme, a Nara-period court lady. More than 4,000 residents in inventive costumes dance through station-front streets hung with uneme lanterns, and the night peaks with the official ending theme, Uneme Dondoko. Look out for the Miss Uneme parade on the main station avenue, a yukata contest at the west exit plaza and a lantern tunnel in the station square. The festival dates from 1965, when Koriyama merged with surrounding towns and villages and residents wanted a celebration to unite the new city. Nara shares the same legend, which led the two to become sister cities, and a goodwill delegation from Nara comes to join in.
