About
At Hayama Shrine in the Kamitedaoka area of Tomioka, flaming torches race up the mountain at night. Young men in white cotton shoulder huge torches over 3 meters long and heavier than 40 kilograms and charge up the dark slope under a shower of sparks, a sight well worth seeing. The festival prays for rich harvests and safe homes, has been handed down for more than 400 years, and is an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Fukushima Prefecture. The shrine is a short drive from the Joban-Tomioka interchange on the Joban Expressway.
