About
On the second Saturday of April, Tejikarao Shrine in the Kuramae area of Gifu City holds its annual festival, a fire ritual more than 300 years old whose origins are unknown. It is an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Gifu Prefecture. After nightfall, bare-chested men shoulder portable shrines loaded with gunpowder and push into falling curtains of sparks. Once the charges catch, the shrines spray fire of their own, and the bearers spin and ring bells over the bang of firecrackers. Later on, hand-held tube fireworks and set pieces join in. Also take a look at the huge sacred rope on the torii along the approach, about 12.5 meters long and roughly a ton in weight. Meitetsu Tejikara Station is a 5-minute walk away.
