About
Also known as the Sanno Matsuri, the festival of Hie Shrine marks the start of spring in Hida-Takayama. Over two days each year, lavish yatai floats are lined up in the center of town, and karakuri puppets perform as an offering to the gods. Lion dancers and a festival procession travel through the district, and on the first night there is a glowing evening festival. Much of the central area is closed to cars, so park at a temporary lot and take a shuttle bus. Please look without touching the floats, as oils from hands damage them. Events can be cancelled due to weather, and they are not moved to another day.
