About

Hachiman Shrine in Mino holds its spring festival over a Saturday and Sunday, in three parts: flower mikoshi, floats and niwaka street comedy. The flower mikoshi steal the show. Each carries 250 to 300 flexible poles topped with cherry-pink blossoms of Mino washi paper, fitting for a paper-making town. On Saturday more than 30 of them, large and small, move through town so that the streets seem full of swaying cherry blossoms. From the evening, neighborhoods perform Mino Nagashi Niwaka, improvised skits full of satire and puns that end on a punchline. On Sunday 6 floats and other processions travel through the center. It all happens near the Udatsu townscape, so you can enjoy the historic streets too.
