About
The annual festival of Ketawakamiya Shrine in Hida-Furukawa fills the town for two spring days and is one of the great festivals of Hida. As the Okoshi-daiko drum ritual and float procession, it is an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan and is inscribed as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. The first night belongs to the Okoshi-daiko: men wrapped in white sarashi cloth move a tower carrying a giant drum through the streets late into the night, while young men called tsuke-daiko rush at it one after another. The second day is all color, with carved, embroidered floats lined up together, karakuri puppet offerings, children's kabuki and lion dances, set among white-walled storehouses along the Setogawa canal.
