About

The festival of Ogaki Hachiman Shrine signals early summer in this castle town. It is said to have started in 1648, when the shrine, guardian of the whole castle town, was rebuilt and 10 yama floats were made and pulled, giving it more than 370 years of history. Today 13 floats tour the town. Floats granted by the feudal lord roll alongside floats belonging to townspeople, and the fun is seeing both karakuri puppets, common around Nagoya, and performances on top of floats, common in the Kansai region, in one festival. It became an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan in 2015 and UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2016. Plenty of food stalls line the streets each year.
