About

On the fourth Sunday of February, Jurin-in in Ukai-cho, Fuchu, marks its spring festival with a barefoot walk over hot ash. The temple is known locally as a place to shake off bad luck, and once the prayer sticks have burned down, worshippers step across what remains, asking for health and happiness. People in the Bingo area have long treated this ordeal as a sign that spring is on its way. It used to fall on the first Daishi day of the lunar year, and moved to its current Sunday slot in 2022. You don't need to be a priest to take part: anyone can walk, and many come hoping to recover from illness or stay well all year. While you're there, look into Hakumeido, a small cave on the grounds lined with 33 Kannon statues.
